“Look,” he said, utterly exasperated, “contrary to what you may think, I have some idea of what I’m doing. I know it’s stupid, but it’s also crazy! Crazy enough to work! Trust me on this.” Red had been around for enough centuries, he’d seen enough situations to know that this was the only way, and after all, he’d be back in a minute or two if a blast hit his body just wrong.

Her smile was wider, but sharper at the edges, not quite cordial. She wasn’t exactly a fan of staring, either, mostly because she liked avoiding talking to old white dudes, if she could help it.

But, she didn’t mind, irking him, not in the slightest. So, she didn’t apologize.  “You’ve got red on you,” she said, pointing at the edge of his shoe, just near the sole.

Raymond saw that twinge behind the eyes, the subtle lack of gentility that took over her expression, it made his own smile that much more genuine. Something about her reminded him of Luli, may she rest in peace.

He didn’t look, chuckling. “I’m sure I do, thank you for bringing it to my attention.” Just her luck, that veneer she was keeping on just made him want to stay, not stop talking to her. Red sat across from her, smiling still. “Do you make it a habit to notice such small details about strangers and just–point them out out of the goodness of your own heart?” It may have sounded petty, but it was an honest question.

“You again,” it sounds closer to an accusation than a greeting. He’s got one of those voices that grates on her, she doesn’t like strangers scolding her, and she doesn’t forget. And she certainly doesn’t forgive.

“You sound less than enthused to see me. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised.” Their last meeting hadn’t started off on the best note and never really reached a good one. “We do happen to live in the same town, so odds are good that this isn’t the last time we’ll meet.”

He wasn’t sure what, specifically, had caught this young woman’s eye that had her staring at him so intently, so he proffered a smile–tight, but cordial–and faced her fully. “I’m sure whatever’s got your attention is fascinating, but you’re staring. I should be used to it by now, but it still…irks me.”
